About this track

The Three Bears Track is a challenging 13 km sand-based walk near Dunsborough, best suited to experienced bushwalkers. The route traverses coastal heath and sandy terrain, offering a serious inland adventure away from the obvious seaside paths. Allow about 3 hours and prepare for a demanding day out.

Highlights

  • Challenging sand-based terrain tests fitness
  • Coastal heath and native WA vegetation
  • Inland route away from crowds
  • Full day walk for experienced walkers

What to expect

Soft sand underfoot throughout makes walking slower and more energy-demanding than firmer trails. The track winds through low coastal heath with minimal shade, so exposure to sun and wind is constant. Gradients are generally gentle but the sand surface itself adds difficulty. Signposting should be followed carefully given the sandy landscape.

Good to know

Carry at least 2–3 litres of water; there are no reliable water sources on route. Wear sturdy walking shoes with good ankle support for sand stability. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is essential. Avoid December–February due to heat. Spring (Aug–Oct) offers wildflowers and cooler temperatures. Check local conditions before setting out.
