About this track

Crab Creek Road is a challenging 16 km unpaved track inland from Broome, suited to experienced walkers and suitable for mountain biking. The route traverses red earth and spinifex country typical of the Kimberley, with creek crossings and creek-line vegetation offering respite from the open terrain. Allow 3.5 hours for the walk; carry plenty of water and be prepared for heat, especially outside the cooler months.

Highlights

  • Red earth Kimberley landscape with spinifex grassland
  • Creek crossings and riparian vegetation
  • Remote bushland experience away from coastal Broome
  • Suitable for experienced walkers or mountain bikers
  • Wildlife viewing opportunities in early morning or late afternoon

What to expect

Unpaved red earth track with variable condition; terrain rises and falls gently through open spinifex country and occasional creek-line scrub. Signposting may be basic; navigation confidence is useful. Little shade except near creek crossings. Exposed to sun and heat for much of the route. Track is rough underfoot in places.

Good to know

Carry at least 2–3 litres of water per person. The Kimberley is extremely hot October to April; walk in cooler months (May–September). Check track conditions locally in Broome before setting out, especially after rain. Wear sturdy boots and a hat. Mountain bikes should be well-maintained for unpaved terrain.
