Tonkin Highway PSP
About this cycle path
The Tonkin Highway PSP is a 60 km shared path running through Perth's eastern corridor, linking Midland to suburbs further south. Mostly flat with some gentle grades, it follows the road reserve and passes through bushland, parkland and developed areas. This is a challenging ride due to its length rather than terrain—best tackled by experienced riders in cooler months. The asphalt surface is consistent and well-suited to road bikes or hybrids.
Highlights
- 60 km continuous asphalt cycle route, mostly flat
- Passes through bushland and parkland corridors
- Suitable for intermediate to experienced cyclists
- Link between Midland and southern Perth suburbs
- Road-bike friendly surface throughout
What to expect
Smooth asphalt underfoot with minimal steep sections—the challenge is distance and stamina rather than hills. The path is signposted and generally separated from traffic. Expect a mix of shade from scattered trees and open, exposed sections; summer sun exposure is significant over 60 km. Gradient is gentle overall, making it achievable for fit riders but requiring pacing and hydration.
Good to know
- Open to cyclists
- Firm/surfaced — more accessible going
Carry plenty of water and sun protection—this is a long ride in full sun for much of the route. Avoid summer months (December–February) due to heat and bushfire risk. Spring and autumn are ideal. A hybrid or road bike suits the asphalt surface. Bring a repair kit for punctures on longer outings. Start early to avoid afternoon heat.
