Cape Le Grand to Wylie Bay
About this track
This 23 km coastal track between Cape Le Grand and Wylie Bay is a challenging sand-walking route for experienced bushwalkers. The trail follows the pristine coastline east of Esperance, crossing beaches, dunes and heath-covered headlands. It's a serious day walk or can be split over two days with camping; navigation and fitness are essential on soft sand, and the exposed coastal setting offers no shelter.
Highlights
- Long stretches of white-sand beaches
- Coastal granite headlands and dune systems
- Isolated viewpoints over Southern Ocean
- Spring wildflowers in heath sections
- Challenging sand terrain for experienced walkers
What to expect
Soft sand makes up the bulk of the walking surface—slow, energy-sapping underfoot. The route undulates across dune ridges and through low coastal heath with intermittent beach sections. Signposting is minimal; navigation is by map and landmarks. Exposure is high: little shade except brief heath patches, strong coastal winds are common, and sun reflection off sand is intense.
Good to know
Carry at least 3 litres of water per person; there are no reliable sources en route. Sand walking is slower than firm ground—allow extra time. Summer heat and bushfire risk make autumn–spring best. Wear sturdy hiking boots for sand support. Start early. Check conditions and tide times locally; some beach sections may be affected by tides. This is a serious route—experience, fitness and navigation skills essential.
