Plumpudding Beach
About this track
Plumpudding Beach is a challenging 7.9 km sand track near Esperance that rewards effort with coastal views and beach solitude. The sandy surface makes this a harder walk than its distance suggests, best tackled early or late in the day when sand is firmer. This is a proper beach walk for fit, prepared bushwalkers rather than a casual stroll.
Highlights
- Long stretch of coastal Indian Ocean beach
- Sand surface demands physical effort
- Quiet, less-trafficked beach scenery
- Challenging terrain suits experienced walkers
- Coastal heath and limestone backdrop
What to expect
Soft sand underfoot for most of the walk — much harder going than packed paths. The beach is relatively exposed to sun and wind, with limited natural shade. Terrain is generally level but the sand shifts and compacts unevenly, making footing variable. Signposting is minimal; navigation is straightforward if you follow the shoreline, but watch for tidal changes. Allow longer than the 1h 45m estimate if sand is loose.
Good to know
Carry plenty of water — 2+ litres — as there's no reliable freshwater source. Start early to avoid midday heat and UV exposure. Sand is most stable at low tide; check tide times before heading out. Summer heat and bushfire risk make cooler months (May–September) preferable. Wear sturdy, sand-friendly footwear with ankle support. No services at the trailhead; stock up in Esperance.
