What to expect
A gravel track with sustained climbs and descents characteristic of the Mundaring hills. The terrain is uneven and rocky underfoot; pace yourself through the tight switchbacks that give the road its name. Sections are shaded by jarrah and marri forest, though exposure increases on higher stretches. Track is generally signposted but navigation requires attention.
Good to know
Carry 2–3 litres of water; there are no reliable sources along the route. Wear sturdy boots with good ankle support for the rocky gravel. Summer heat and bushfire risk make autumn and spring preferable. Start early to finish before dark. Check fire danger ratings before heading out, especially November–March.
