Shannon National Park Bridle Trail
About this bridleway
The Shannon National Park Bridle Trail is a challenging 20 km bridleway through tall karri and marri forest in the South-West, designed for horse riding. The unpaved route winds through pristine bushland south of Northcliffe, offering a serious backcountry experience for experienced riders. Allow 4.5 hours in the saddle and come prepared for variable terrain and forest conditions.
Highlights
- 20 km through old-growth karri forest
- Challenging terrain suited to experienced riders
- Remote bushland away from developed areas
- Naturally shaded forest canopy throughout
- Spring wildflower displays in jarrah–karri country
What to expect
Unpaved forest track with variable footing—expect roots, rocks and soft sections. Terrain rolls through mature karri and marri with occasional steeper pitches; routing is well-signposted for riders. Shade is generous beneath tall trees, but ground cover and drainage vary seasonally. This is genuine backcountry riding, not a manicured trail.
Good to know
- Open to horse riders
Horses are welcome; check park regulations before riding. Carry plenty of water for rider and horse. Avoid summer heat and bushfire risk (Nov–Apr); autumn and spring (Mar–May, Aug–Oct) are ideal. Wear sturdy footwear and protective gear. Allow time to scout the terrain if unfamiliar; the forest is thick and navigation relies on signposting.
