Smith Road is a challenging 17 km unpaved track near Mundaring, best tackled as a half-day adventure for experienced walkers or mountain bikers. The route traverses forest terrain typical of the Perth Hills, with significant elevation and uneven ground throughout. Allow 3 hours 45 minutes and come prepared for a demanding outing in variable shade.

What to expect
Uneven, rocky and rooted unpaved surface with several steep sections. Gradient varies but overall challenging; expect steady climbing and descending. Signposting may be minimal on less-trafficked sections, so navigate carefully. Dappled shade from jarrah and marri forest offers relief, but exposed stretches can be hot and exposed.
Good to know
Carry at least 2 litres of water; no reliable sources on track. Wear sturdy boots or mountain bike shoes for grip on loose surfaces. Spring (Aug–Oct) offers wildflowers and cooler temperatures. Avoid summer due to heat and bushfire risk. Check local conditions before setting out.
