2022 Walking Trail Route 1
About this walking route
A moderate 3.7 km walk on Rottnest Island taking about 50 minutes. The route is signposted throughout, making it suitable for most walkers seeking a half-hour spin around the island's distinctive landscape. You'll experience the mix of coastal heath, sandy tracks and minor elevation that defines Rottnest's terrain, with good views and the chance to spot quokkas if you're patient.
Highlights
- Signposted route, easy navigation
- Coastal heath and island vegetation
- Potential quokka sightings
- Mix of sandy and firmer track
- Half-day walk from settlement
What to expect
Mostly sandy and compacted dirt underfoot with gentle undulation rather than steep climbs. The route follows established tracks across open heath with limited tree cover, so expect full sun exposure for much of the walk. Signposting is clear and regular, keeping navigation straightforward even on a busy island.
Good to know
- Waymarked route
Carry at least 1–1.5 litres of water; Rottnest's exposed terrain offers little shade and the island is hot, especially in summer. Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip on sand. Spring (Aug–Oct) brings wildflowers. Keep distance from quokkas and other wildlife. Start early to avoid midday heat.
