What to expect
Mostly flat to gently rolling terrain over limestone and sandy paths with coastal heath vegetation. The route is well signposted throughout. Expect minimal tree shade—the exposed landscape offers good views but limited shelter. Surfaces vary between packed sand and limestone, so sturdy walking shoes are helpful. The trail is generally easy underfoot with no steep climbs.
Good to know
- Waymarked route
Carry plenty of water—there are no reliable sources on the trail and the exposed terrain offers little shade. Summer heat on Rottnest can be intense; walk early morning or late afternoon. Spring wildflowers (Aug–Oct) are excellent. The island can be windy. Check ferry schedules before heading out. Dogs are generally not permitted in sensitive coastal areas.
