Gabbi Karniny Bidi (The Lakes)
About this walking route
Gabbi Karniny Bidi is a challenging 9.5 km walk on Rottnest Island that loops through the island's interior and coastal landscape. The route takes about two hours and rewards walkers with views across multiple lakes and the surrounding Indian Ocean. This is a serious walk suited to fit bushwalkers comfortable with rough terrain and exposed sections.
Highlights
- Multiple salt lakes with distinctive island ecology
- Coastal views across the Indian Ocean
- Rottnest's native flora and wildlife habitat
- Signposted trail through varied terrain
- Challenging inland walk away from beaches
What to expect
Uneven ground with rocky patches and sandy sections; some steep climbs and descents as the trail traverses between lake basins and higher points. Signposting is good but the route is demanding underfoot. Minimal tree cover means significant sun exposure on most sections, especially in summer. Expect a full-on bushwalk rather than a gentle loop.
Good to know
- Waymarked route
Carry plenty of water—the island is exposed and hot, especially October to April. Summer brings bushfire risk; check conditions before visiting. Wear sturdy walking boots for rough ground. Spring wildflowers (Aug–Oct) are worth the trip. Dogs are not permitted in national parks; this walk covers protected areas.
