What to expect
Mostly sandy and compacted earth underfoot with gentle, rolling grades. The path winds through low scrub and heath typical of Rottnest, with minimal shade. Expect good signposting and clear walking lines. Exposure to sun and wind is significant; the island offers little shelter, so pace yourself and seek lee-side rest spots if needed.
Good to know
Carry plenty of water—Rottnest's sandy terrain and exposure make dehydration a real risk. Wear sun protection and sturdy walking shoes with grip for sandy sections. Best walked in cooler months (May–September). Summer heat is intense; avoid mid-day walks November–March. No dogs allowed on Rottnest Island.
