Weano Gorge
About this footpath
Weano Gorge is a short, easy footpath through one of the Pilbara's most striking gorges. The 1.4 km walk follows the gorge floor, where towering red rock walls and a permanent waterhole create a cool, sheltered corridor through the arid landscape. It's an accessible introduction to Karijini's dramatic geology and takes about 20 minutes at an easy pace.
Highlights
- Towering red rock walls either side of gorge
- Permanent waterhole in gorge floor
- Shaded walk through arid Pilbara country
- Easy terrain, suitable for most fitness levels
What to expect
Unpaved track along the gorge floor, mostly level with occasional minor undulations. The narrow gorge provides good shade from the high rock walls, a welcome relief in the Pilbara heat. Track is well-trodden and easy to follow. The waterhole may be accessed along the way depending on seasonal flow and safety conditions.
Good to know
Carry water even on this short walk; Pilbara heat is intense and shade only covers part of the route. Best visited April–September when temperatures are manageable. Summer (November–March) carries extreme heat and bushfire risk. Wear sturdy footwear for the rocky unpaved surface. No facilities at the trailhead; plan accordingly.
